from 7,000 feet coming inches from death. our cam eras are there as he risks his life. and good morning to all of you. robin and george are both off today. we can only hope escaping the heat. >> i hope they're someplace else that is slightly nicer than times square. >> finding somewhere else is the problem. at least in this country. this heat wave making life miserable for some 200 million americans and it has now arrived here to the east coast. virtually every major northeast city could break an all-time record. y every major northeast >> here's a look at what the temperature is doing right here right now in new york city. 85 degrees. the heat index is what it really feels like and that is 94

degrees, guys, it's 7:00 a.m. so you can only imagine what's going to happen with the rest of the day. when relief is going to be coming. we'll put sam champion on the hot seat. any seat out here is a hot seat. >> yeah. >> in just a few minutes. especially when the sun comes up. not too hot to get the goo goo dolls, a quarter century now in the making out live with us in central park, the summer concert series on "gma" continuing and we'll get to that in just a bit but, sam, let's get to you. the latest on temperatures that are beyond blistering. >> no matter where you are, water yourself today. that heat wave that sizzled in the middle of the country for weeks has moved to the eastern half of the nation. 100, 103 that have never been warmer. could be dropping records that will go 85 years. as the heat moved east. >> takes your breath away. >> reporter: the big apple is on the broiler with heat indexes

soaring to 110 degrees. the statue of liberty's crown closed to visitors. in chicago, parents were steamed over a local summer school without air-conditioning. >> they deserve to come here comfortably to learn. >> reporter: in detroit, the city started rolling power blackouts. it's just before 2:00 in new york and the air temperature is 94. add in the humidity and heat index is 107. as anybody in the city knows it's hotter on the pavement. this reading 113. at a new york city subway station we found temperatures over 95 degrees. this dry cleaner's was sweltering over 100 degrees and in times square, the bright lights turned off to save power. within five minutes i already developed a full sweat. the kind of heat that can have a real physical impact. let's bring in dr. besser and test some folks out. >> i already feel my pulse is racing. that's what we'll see here. sure enough we found dave solal delivering water.

>> can i take your pulse? >> water he could have used in this heat. >> pulse 160. that's bad. >> his heart racing trying to keep his bottle cool. but with five minutes in air-conditioning his pulse had dropped 40 beats per minute. >> are you feeling better. >> yeah, with the water. >> and jim sciutto found those conditions in d.c. too. >> reporter: spend a few minutes here, it's 102 degrees on our thermometer and the only escape here is the shade. >> no relief in philly either. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: so this is the hottest place in all of philadelphia. 3,500 hoagies and cheese steaks. >> reporter: these cooks say working around these temperatures is no joke. >> it's 100 degrees outside and you're standing over a 240-degree grill cooking up thousands of hoagies a day. what's this like? >> twice as hot. you can tell.

>> reporter: here are the daily records we're likely to break today in the big population centers in the east talking about new york city at 100. could be 101. boston, 99. washington, d.c., 103. now, josh, the all-time record, never been wararr from 102 to 104 so we're even close to those. >> unbelievable. it's blanketing the entire northeast on really what could be the very worst day at least here in the east. i want to bring in now dr. richard besser to discuss it, rich, again, could be the worst of it at least here in the northeast. what's your level of concern? 200 million americans are touched by this. >> i'm very concerned. danger levels and talking temperature but have to really focus on the heat index because it factors in the humidity which makes it so hard for us to shed the heat. once we hit 105, that's the danger level you really should be indoors. >> you think when you see somebody sweating excessably, they're in trouble but that's

not the worst of it. >> if you stop sweating in this heat, in just 10 to 15 minutes your body temperature can hit 106 or higher and that can be deadly. you got to catch it before then. >> we saw records being set, not just during the day when the sun is up but at night, 98 all-time highs throughout the heat wave. >> no one sleeping. take a cool bath or shower before you go to sleep. you can try putting your sheets in the freezer. send me on swit switter@dr.richardbesser. >> don't go out unless you have to. now to a breaking story we've been following out of upstate new york. a dramatic and deadly crash involving a tour bus and tractor trailer on a busy interstate 90. it erupted into flames with more than 50 passengers inside. a soldier reportedly driving behind the bus at the time ran into action and we have a

reporter at the scene. keith, describe the situation there now. >> reporter: right now, depth reconstruction officials are here looking at the charred remains of that passenger bus from hamilton, ontario and the tractor trailer that hit the back of the bus at about 130 this morning. the driver of the tractor trailer is dead. as many as 30 people on that bus taken to the hospital. two in critical condition and right now authorities are trying to figure out if the bus which had broken down along the highway was in the process of pulling back out in traffic when it happened. investigation in the early stages, though, and still have a lot of work to do and the road will remain closed for quite some time. >> what more can you tell us about this hero soldier who may have seen the crash from behind and run into the burning wreckage to help save people? >> reporter: yeah, we have an army post an hour north of us

and understand a soldier from there tried to save some passengers. we were told without his help the death toll could have been much higher. >> thank you very much. i am sure we'll hear more about this. another in a rash of bus crashes on our nation's interstates. the debt showdown in washington. with just ten days to go until america's credit line runs out a deal may be in the works. the stakes are so high with everything from interest rates to your social security check riding on the outcome. abc's jon karl joins us with the latest. what about it? how close are we finally to a deal? >> reporter: getting close to a deal. the outlines of this deal include up to $3 trillion in spending cuts over the next ten years including some cuts to popular entitlement programs like medicare and social security, also, elizabeth, it

would include a promise or a commitment that congress would bring more money in through tax revenues by reforming the code, closing some of those loopholes, something that congress would act on. >> that last one, isn't that basically a tax increase in disguise? >> well, certainly some will call it that. the rates won't go up. congress would have to act over the next year. if they didn't ago, automatic steps would be taken that both sides wouldn't like which would be tax hikes and spending cuts possibly talking about repealing part of the health care bill. >> even if president obama and speaker boehner reach a deal they have their own rank and file to make happy. i was struck by a comment by barbara mikulski. we heard reports of a trillion dollar cut with no revelations. sounds like mt. vesuvius. not going over well and speaker boehner has, what is it, many

reluctant and recalcitrant freshmen to work with. >> reporter: no guarantee even if they get a deal that it passes. >> stay tuned as they say. all right, jon. i'm sure you'll work it through the weekend. rahm emanuel walked abruptly out of an interview when a reporter asked him where he plans to send his kids to school. he said it's a private issue but one that many voters feel they have a right to ask and linsey davis has more. >> i have so many more questions to ask. >> reporter: it was a simple question that triggered this abrupt reaction. >> i'm done. >> reporter: chicago mayor rahm emanuel stormed off right in the middle of this interview with wmaq-tv chicago. his temper flared when asked where his children will go to

school. >> oh, marianne, let me break the news to you. my children are not in a public position. the mayor is and as long as i'm -- >> you don't think it will be newsworthy to all? >> no, you will do that. you're asking me a value statement, not a policy. no, you have to appreciate that. my children are not an instrument of me being mayor. my children are my children. >> reporter: his office later confirmed emanuel's children will be attending the prestigious university of chicago laboratory schools. annual tuition can be as much as 25,000 for his three children that could mean $75,000 a year. for public officials, the decision of where to send their children to school can be controversial. ask governor chris christie or better yet, don't. this is how he responded when somebody asked about his children on a pbs call-in show. >> you know what, first off, i

and want time to review the full proposal f they agree team facilities would open tomorrow so stay tuned. in los angeles, two new arrests in connection with the beating of a giants fan on opening day. bryan stow, a father of two, was beaten into a coma and remains in serious condition. police have reportedly cleared the original suspect. the pentagon is officially ending on its ban on gays openly serving in the military. it will go into effect in two months' time. new government figures show just how long the nation's unemployed have been suffering, 30% or nearly one in three unemployed workers have now been out of a job for more than a year. that's the most severe long-term finally, all of us are s. looking of ways to save a couple extra minutes during our morning routine. this might take the cake. train station in the nether

i want to say this. i want to say this in a way that everyone will will. so drink water. water yourself today. water yourself today. >> i like that. >> all right, thanks, sam. so many people headed to the beach to beat the heat. this week's terrifying shark attack on a 6-year-old girl in north carolina whose still recovering has parents thinking twice about the dangers that lurk in shallow waters. abc's steve osunsami is in topsail beach, north carolina, with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. it looks like that 6-year-old girl is going to make it. the hospital's latest report is that they've upgraded her condition to good condition.

experts tell us that parents coming to the beach need to watch their children most closely in the early mornings and evenings when sharks are likely to come to the shore to feed. we were out last night in those hours before dusk when experts say they're most likely to stalk the shoreline. there were families and children still playing in the water on the same beaches where sharks have attacked. >> parents need to be with their children every minute they're in the water. even if they are only up to knee-deep. >> reporter: carolyn cartwright is furious with authorities saying they should post signs warning of sharks. >> i think of somebody out surfing. i don't think of them being just maybe ten feet from the shore. >> reporter: she and her family were visiting from pennsylvania three weeks ago when a shark sank its teeth into her daughter's leg. >> i saw my leg and i saw it was

cut open wide and it was bleeding. >> reporter: 10-year-old cassidy still can't walk. on the night she was attacked they never closed the beach. >> after a shark bite they should evacuate the water which they didn't do. people kept swimming. >> reporter: we talked to the town manager who said shark attacks are rare and even if he posted signs people would ignore them. but this is what's lurking below. sharks of all sizes gathering at sunken ship wrecks. >> we have bull sharks, sandbar shocks, tiger sharks. >> reporter: last month a few recorded this video of a four-foot black tip shark one wrestled on to shore. it was the same beach where the 6-year-old girl was attacked this week. authorities say that your

chances of getting struck by lightning are much greater but parents say they still want those warnings, josh. they still want the choice. >> steve osunsami, thank you. joining us to discuss it is andy dehart from the national aquarium. five attacks on young swimmers since last summer. is there a reason children might be the together? >> unfortunately children are not the target and humans are not the target for the shark bites that happen. they're in all the waters and they're out there hunting prey items which are normally fish. the flash of a pale hand can look like their normal prey animal and accidents do happen. >> we heard they're rather rare. are there precautions that everybody can take to make sure this doesn't happen? well, the first thing is not to worry about it. the risk of shark attack is extremely low, less than 100 attacks worldwide. only four or five fate a the

reality is sharks have more to fear from us. we kill 200,000 sharks a day. but there are some steps we can take. as mentioned earlier, avoid swimming at dusk and dawn, peak shark feeding time. the shark also come to bait fish so avoid them. they will stack up inside of a parallel sandbar that runs parallel to shore and then oftentimes contrasting colors can kind of exacerbate the color, yellow, white or silver, those are high contrast colors in murky water. >> the sharks are not targeting humans. andy, director of biological programs at the national aquarium, we appreciate your time this morning. >> scary thing to look out for. the husband of this missing mom, a person of interest in her disappearance. now he speaks out for the first time and nancy grace joins us live to weigh in. taking the plunge from 7,000 feet up.

news conference in an a list. same sex marriage legislation passed the maryland senate this year but has stalled in the house of delegates. today we will find out whether or not there are enough signatures to put the instaid state tuition bill for next year ballot. board validate more than 108,000 signatures in that petition drive. this is well over the 65,000 signatures needed. and the state board of elections is scheduled to certify that petition. we will have more news and weather in a half-hour. now back to new york for "good morning america o

that man you're about to see flies at speeds of up to 300 miles an hour attempting his most dangerous stunt yet while our cameras are rolling and it's pretty unbelievable. >> wow. >> he's one of our miracle people. >> jumping off all by himself. he wasn't even pushed. >> wasn't a bungee cord or trampoline. >> we'll turn to parenting and the pill. it is a discussion had in millions of american home, the controversy now heating up over just how early is, in fact, too early for teens or sometimes tweens to start taking birth control. >> but we begin this morning to get with new details in the disappearance of the missouri mother of triplets and vanished more than 50 days and jacque waller's estranged husband is speaking out for the first time and police say james clay waller was the last known person to see his wife. he's been named a person of interest and abc's yunji de nies has the very latest in this troubling case. >> reporter: it's been seven

weeks since jacque waller, a mother of 5-year-old triplets disappeared. on the day she went missing she met with her estranged husband, a former police officer who told investigators they argued and she left on foot. >> owant her to come home alive >> reporter: they say clay waller is a person of interest and for the first time he's speaking out. >> i miss my wife and the kids, we're just -- we're just trying to fight so see them. >> reporter: child welfare authorities have forbidden contact between the father and the kids. jacque's parents say she was afraid of clay. >> i know the threats he made against her and i know the diaries that she kept outlining those threats and he did it. there's no doubt in my mind. >> reporter: clay said he had nothing to do with his wife's disappearance. >> can't change how people feel.

i mean, there's a lot of emotions that are running high right now. we're all just sad. this is sad on both sieddes of e fence here. >> reporter: his attorney says mr. waller has received death threats. he's afraid to go out in public and that jaque's accusations of threats are unfounded. >> again, without commenting on the evidence, even if they were, they happen in cases that i handle every day. it doesn't mean that somebody is going to follow through with it. >> reporter: police have spent weeks searching this rural landscape. >> like a needle in a haystack. >> reporter: that's what it feels like. >> it really does. >> reporter: by all accounts this loving mother would never have left on her own. in your heart what do you think happened to jacque waller? >> right now it doesn't look good. something terrible has happened i feel in my heart too. >> reporter: jaque's family is

focused on her children. it must be hard when they ask. >> they say, go find mommy. if she's lost, go find her. what are you doing sitting here? go find her. that's tough, folks. i'm telling you. >> reporter: they are planning another major search this weekend praying for a miracle. >> we just want answers. that's all we're after. >> reporter: the not knowing must be the hardest. >> the not knowing is the hardest part. >> reporter: for "good morning america," yunji de nies, abc news, jackson, missouri. for more now we'll turn to nancy grace, the host of "nancy grace" on hln. listening to those kids and grandparents it is heartbreaking. how has this trail gone so cold since early june when you started following the case. >> i'm not so sure the case really has gone cold. as a matter of fact, police have been searching waller's home. they've been following up on

over 250 leads. it really doesn't help, though, when police are out searching for the woman and the person of interest drives by and shoots a bird at the cops while they're out looking for potentially a body. right now waller does not have custody of his three children which i think speaks volumes. but the big news is that according to jaque's father blood evidence has been found in waller's home. >> we know there is also evidence apparently that jaque might have been looking for a new apartment around the time she was missing. what does that tell you. >> it tells me a lot. according to waller, he and jaque had no estrangement but according to her mother, jaque had already rented an apartment in the same town where her sister lives. if she's not having a problem, why is she moving out to another apartment? not only that, it seems as if

there were domestic issues let me say euphemistically for a long time but according to her sister escalated when she mentioned divorce about a year ago. now that she mentioned it i have a big question with waller's story. he says jaque came to her home. she got angry over an argument and left on foot. can somebody tell me why was her then park found five miles away on an interstate with a flat tire. fyi, cops can tell if they were slashed. >> we all know when people look guilty and turn out to be innocent. is it possible he had nothing to do with her disappearance and people are rushing to a judgment. >> it absolutely is possible he had nothing to do with this. his story to me doesn't fit together but that doesn't mean he's guilty of murder. it could mean he's hiding

something else but to say that your wife left on foot when her car is parked five miles away, cell phone, purse, keys missing, that is very unusual and also i've got to keep in mind statistics. although they are not admissible into court, it's fives times likely a woman murdered by an intimate acquaintance than a stranger and one-third of women are murdered at the hands of a spouse. see, i'v got that floating around in my head. >> i would suspect statistics show that even fewer mothers ever voluntarily leave their children behind. >> well, elizabeth, you know being a mom yourself, no one -- wild horses couldn't drag me away from my twins and from my understanding that's how jaque felt as well. >> we hope we have some answers in this. >> apparently a search resumes this weekend and i will be on the latest.

the pill, even tweens, it's often their parents taking them to the doctor's office to get the prescription. should they? we tack a look at the growing debate. this woman is always worrying about her middle school daughter, to what she's doing to what pressure she's facing. >> the kids are so far advanced in their thoughts and talking about sex, it's really, really scary. >> reporter: this week pat made an appointment with the doctor to discuss putting daria on the birth control pill at the tender age of 13. >> no matter how much i talk to her she doesn't know what's going to happen when she's with a boy and it happens all too fast and would want to get her on the pill as early as i could. >> reporter: one in five american girls between the ages of 13 and 18, 2.5 million teens are on the birth control pill. a 50% jump in the past decade and doctors say the age at which

teens are starting on the pill is getting younger. >> we have put people on the pill that are as young as 12. >> reporter: dr. mary ross ser a gynecologist who treats adolescents. she says a growing number of parents are seeking birth control pill prescriptions for their teen daughters to treat acne, regulate periods and prevent teen pregnancy. >> i think it's okay to have their teenager on the pill if they're ready to go on it and ask for it. it's safe ever than having a teenage pregnancy. >> but many worry about the known link to a heightened risk of blood clots and a growing number of studies suggest a link between the pill and breast cancer. dr. erica schultz is an md who specializes in women's hormonal issue and say doctors are overprescribing the pill to teens. >> i have found some women who have been on birth control pills for a long time have trouble conceiving. a see a lot of women who bring me their daughters with symptoms, mood, depression, weight gain that disappear on

the birth control pills or are removed. >> reporter: so what is the concern? trying to ward off the scenarios portrayed on "16 and pregnant" to do, to put their daughter on the pill or not. we posed it to a panel of six moms of teen girls. some have children on the pill, some don't. all agree it's a complicated matter. you're not opposed to the idea. >> no, not at all. i would much rather have her on bird control if i even felt that she might be sexually active or soon. >> i'm kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum. i have a value system that we've tried to promote abstinence. >> this general with teenage girls and their boyfriend knows that they're on the birth control pill and it may not even be for pregnancy prevention, is there more pressure on those girls then to maybe say yes? >> the answer is probably. >> probably. >> probably. >> do you ask your children -- did you take your pill today? do you remind them. >> i would.
